Sell bitcoin from your Bitcoin wallet (on-chain) for pesos
Learn how to sell bitcoin from a Bitcoin (on-chain) or hardware wallet with Aureo. Follow the steps and understand fees, price fixation, and peso payouts.
Aureo now supports selling bitcoin over the Bitcoin network, also known as on-chain, alongside Lightning. If you hold bitcoin in a compatible wallet, including a hardware wallet, you can send it from there and receive pesos in your own Mexican bank account or pay someone else’s Mexican bank account registered in Aureo.
This option lets you prepare a sale without first moving your bitcoin to a Lightning wallet. This guide explains what changes, how to use it, and what to check before confirming your payment.
What does selling bitcoin on-chain mean?
An on-chain transfer is recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain. A transaction gets its first confirmation when it is included in a block; later blocks add confirmations. For background, see Aureo’s guide to how Bitcoin works.
With Aureo, you create a sale order, receive instructions for sending bitcoin, and make the payment from your wallet. Aureo validates the payment and sends pesos to your selected bank account once the transaction’s conditions are met.
On-chain or Lightning: which should you choose?
On-chain is usually the better option for larger amounts when immediate execution is not a priority. It is useful when your bitcoin is in an on-chain or hardware wallet and you can wait for network confirmations.
Lightning is ideal for smaller amounts and when you value speed. You can also use it on Aureo to sell tens of thousands of pesos, subject to your account limits and your wallet’s sending capacity. Always choose a network your wallet supports and review the order’s conditions.
If you will send from… | Choose… | Check… |
|---|---|---|
An on-chain Bitcoin wallet, including a compatible hardware wallet. | On-chain. | The address, exact amount, quote validity, and required minimum network fee. |
A wallet that sends over Lightning. | Lightning. | The payment request and the conditions shown for that order. |
An on-chain address and a Lightning payment request are different instructions. Do not interchange them or assume that one network’s conditions apply to the other.
When can on-chain selling be useful?
- Cover an expense: convert part of your bitcoin into pesos when you need to use it.
- Receive pesos in your account: select your own Mexican bank account as the destination.
- Make a payment: choose another person’s Mexican bank account registered in Aureo.
How to sell bitcoin on-chain with Aureo
Before starting, check your verification, available limits, and recipient’s details. You will need access to your wallet and enough bitcoin to send the exact amount and pay the network fee.
1. Open Aureo and select Sell
Sign in and select Sell (Vender in the screenshots) on the home screen.
Select Vender to start a sale.
2. Choose the receiving bank account
Choose a saved account: your own or another person’s account in Mexico. To add a new recipient, select Nuevo contacto and provide the details Aureo requests.
Check the recipient before continuing. The account must be registered and available for the transaction.
Surnames and some bank details are blurred for privacy.
3. Enter the peso amount
Enter how many pesos the recipient should receive. Review the approximate bitcoin equivalent and your available limit, then select Continue (Continuar).
MX$100,000 is the example in this screenshot. Your own order determines the amount, exchange rate and applicable fee.
4. Choose On-chain or Lightning
On the network selection screen, choose the network your sending wallet supports. Select On-chain for an on-chain Bitcoin wallet or hardware wallet. Select Lightning if you will send from a Lightning-compatible wallet.
Each order uses one network. An on-chain address and a Lightning payment request are different payment instructions; use the instructions for the network you selected.
Original network selector. On-chain payout requires 2 confirmations; the time varies and is not a guaranteed 20-minute wait.
5. Review your sale
Check the bank recipient, peso amount, approximate bitcoin amount and selected network. You may add a payment reference. Select Continue to payment (Continuar al pago) when the details are correct.
The next screen shows the quote and its expiry. Creating an order does not mean bitcoin has been sent or that the price is fixed unconditionally.
Check the recipient, amount and network before opening the payment instructions.
6. Send bitcoin from your wallet
Prepare a Bitcoin on-chain transaction in your wallet. Copy the address or scan the QR code from your order and send the exact bitcoin amount displayed. With a hardware wallet, also verify the address and amount on the device before approving.
The on-chain quote is valid for 15 minutes. Follow the minimum network fee shown in the order; it can differ between orders. The 2 sat/vB in this screenshot is an example, not a fixed fee recommendation. The pricing section below explains when the price is fixed.
Recipient’s surname blurred. Always use your own order’s instructions, never those from a screenshot.
7. Follow the transaction status
Return to Aureo to follow payment detection, confirmations, and the peso payout. Your own order’s status shows when each stage is complete.
When is the price fixed?
The on-chain quote is valid for 15 minutes. The price is fixed when an eligible payment is detected: the quote must still be valid and the transaction must meet Aureo’s required minimum network fee.
If the transaction does not meet that fee, price fixation may wait for the first confirmation. If the quote expires before the price is fixed, market pricing applies. The 15 minutes are the quote’s validity period, not an additional guaranteed-price period after payment detection.
When are pesos sent?
Aureo sends pesos after 2 Bitcoin confirmations and payment validation. Detecting a bitcoin payment and sending pesos are separate stages.
Confirmations depend on the Bitcoin network, and payment processing can add time. There is no fixed arrival time. Follow the status of your own order.
Which wallet can you use?
Use a wallet that can send bitcoin over the Bitcoin on-chain network. You can also use a compatible hardware wallet: verify the address and amount on the device before approving.
Bitcoin support does not mean every wallet offers the same networks, fees, or sending controls. Check that you can follow your order’s instructions. If your wallet only sends over Lightning, select Lightning. Follow the Help Center guide to selling bitcoin with Lightning.
Want to sell more than MX$200,000?
You can request an OTC sale and desk access from the app.
- Start a sale, select the recipient and enter the amount. For a sale above MX$200,000, review the OTC route shown in the app.
- Choose how you want to be contacted and select Solicitar venta OTC. If you do not have OTC access, this also starts the access review.
- Complete any required verification and contract signing. The desk contacts you to coordinate the operation; submitting a request does not execute a trade.
Limits: OTC sales above MX$200,000 are subject to access approval. Tier 2 allows up to MX$2,000,000 per month. Above that, Tier 3 requires an approved custom monthly limit. The amount you can transact depends on your approved limit and remaining monthly allowance. Access requires at least Tier 2 and the applicable signed contract.
OTC is an assisted service with conditions agreed with the desk. Do not assume the regular on-chain sale’s pricing and payout conditions apply to an OTC trade.
