OTC Desk vs Exchange for Large Bitcoin Buys in Mexico

OTC Desk vs Exchange for Large Bitcoin Buys in Mexico

For large bitcoin orders in Mexico: when a private OTC desk beats an exchange order book, covering slippage, firm quotes, settlement and compliance checks.

Mexico · By Tristan Borges Solari · Published · 7 min read

Summary: Below MX$200,000, an app or exchange completes a bitcoin purchase in minutes at roughly the price on screen. Above that, you have two ways to execute. On an exchange order book, a large order eats through several price levels and suffers slippage. At a private over-the-counter (OTC) desk you get one firm price for the whole amount, off the public book and with stricter compliance checks. Which is cheaper depends on the BTC/MXN book at that moment and on where you want the bitcoin delivered. Retail fee comparisons live in our guide to buying bitcoin in Mexico with SPEI.

What changes when the order is large

On an exchange you buy against an order book: a public list of sell offers at different prices, each for a limited quantity. A market order executes at the best available price, but that price is not guaranteed: parts of a large order can execute at prices different from the last trade.

If you ask for more bitcoin than is offered at the best price, the exchange fills the rest at the next levels up. The gap between the price you expected and the average you got is slippage. It grows with order size and with thin liquidity in the pair. This matters for peso buyers: a BTC/MXN book at a quiet hour can be far thinner than a BTC/USD book on a global exchange, and routing through dollars carries its own conversion cost. Do not assume a slippage figure without looking at the book at that moment.

A limit order caps the price: it fills only at your limit or better, but execution is not guaranteed. It can fill partially and, if the market moves away, you do not buy. For a large order that means several attempts, hours of price exposure, and an order sitting visibly in the book.

Hypothetical market-impact example

The figures below are invented to show the mechanism. They do not represent any exchange or any real day.

In this hypothetical, a MX$3,000,000 market order pays 0.20% above the screen price, plus the exchange's taker fee. On a deep book real slippage can be far smaller; on a thin one, larger. What does not change is that everyone watching the book sees it happen.

How a private desk quotes

An OTC desk (over the counter, meaning off the public book) does not make you compete with other orders. You send a request for quote (RFQ) stating the asset, amount, and side, and the desk returns a firm price for the full amount; accept it and the price is locked. Quotes are short-lived (Coinbase Prime documents about 2.5 seconds for its automated RFQ). The desk is your counterparty, not the market, so your order never reaches a public book or moves the price before it fills.

Entry thresholds vary: as of September 2026, Kraken serves OTC spot trades from US$50,000, Binance from US$200,000 on its manual RFQ, and Bitso publishes no minimum. At Aureo, the private desk operates from MX$200,000 per order, with a published fee of 1.00% up to MX$2,000,000 and a custom quote above that; Patrimonio states execution up to MX$20,000,000 per transaction.

A desk's cost does not always show up as a fee. Many desks earn on the spread, the gap between the quoted price and a market reference; Binance, for example, states its spot RFQ trades carry no fee. Aureo publishes an explicit tiered fee and states it applies no hidden spread over the spot price. The method is the same either way: set the quote against a reference price (the midpoint of a liquid book or an index), add any fee, and put that total up against the exchange route, which is taker fee plus estimated slippage. In the hypothetical above, the exchange would cost 0.20% plus the current taker fee (0.780% at Bitso Alpha's entry tier, as of September 2026); the desk, its fee or its spread. Which wins depends on that day's book and quote.

Settlement: where the bitcoin ends up and where the pesos come from

On an exchange, purchased bitcoin sits in a custodial balance until you withdraw it. At a private desk, settlement is agreed in advance: Aureo delivers to a wallet the client controls or, on request, to a Multi-Institution Custody (MIC) vault via Onramp, a 2-of-3 multisig across three independent institutions with segregated vaults titled to the client; Aureo holds no bitcoin by default. Our guide to Bitcoin custody options covers the criteria for large amounts.

On the peso side, you need a Mexican bank account with a CLABE to send SPEI transfers; Aureo's verification accepts a passport or residence card, plus a CURP for Mexican residents and an RFC for Mexican tax residents. SPEI has no system-wide maximum (Banxico states payments can be for any amount); the caps you see belong to your bank. Raise your transfer limit before requesting a quote, because the quote expires in seconds and the desk waits for funds to settle.

Compliance: why the desk asks for more paperwork

In Mexico, the habitual, professional exchange of virtual assets by anyone other than a licensed financial institution is a "vulnerable activity" under the federal anti-money-laundering law (LFPIORPI, article 17, section XVI, as reformed in the Official Gazette on 16 July 2025). The provider must always identify the client and must file a notice with the authorities when an operation reaches 210 UMA, equal to MX$24,635.10 at the 2026 UMA according to the SAT's anti-money-laundering portal. Every private-desk order exceeds that threshold, so the notice is a routine part of the trade, not a red flag.

That is why a desk asks, beyond basic identification, for a documented explanation of the source of funds or wealth; at Aureo this is Level 2 verification (how verification works). The provider's notice does not replace your own tax filing: gains on disposing of bitcoin are declared separately under Mexican law, and if you are a tax resident elsewhere too, check both sets of rules with an advisor. If you buy through a Mexican company, read the Bitcoin tax framework for corporations and confirm with Aureo which documents apply to your case; Aureo provides business reports and settlement evidence, not tax advice.

Price

Slippage on market orders; limit orders may not fill

Firm price; the spread may sit inside the quote

Partial fills

When each one makes sense

An exchange or app makes sense when the order is below MX$200,000, when you can split it into unhurried recurring buys (see our Bitcoin DCA guide), or when you want price control through limit orders and accept the wait. A private desk makes sense when the order is large relative to the book you see at that moment, when you prefer the trade to stay invisible, when you need settlement to your own wallet or to institutional custody in one operation, or when you are buying for a company or family estate and need orderly evidence. A purchase tied to property often fits (Bitcoin and real estate in Mexico).

Next step

Look at the BTC/MXN book on the exchange you would use and estimate how many levels your order would consume; then request a quote from a desk and compare it with the reference price at that instant. If your order exceeds MX$200,000, Patrimonio describes Aureo's private desk and lets you request a quote. For corporate treasuries, Businesses is the contact point for confirming the onboarding, documents and settlement that apply to the case; public fees are on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

A service that executes large orders off an exchange's public order book. You send a request for quote (RFQ) for an amount, the desk returns a firm price for the whole quantity and, if you accept, the trade settles at that price to the account or wallet you agreed on.

There is no universal rule. It depends on your order size relative to the depth of the BTC/MXN book at that moment and on how much discretion and documentation you need. As a reference, Aureo's private desk operates from MX$200,000 per order (as of September 2026); below that, the app completes a purchase in minutes.

The gap between the price you expected and the average price your order actually filled at. It happens when a market order asks for more bitcoin than is offered at the best price and the exchange fills the rest at higher levels. A limit order avoids it but may not execute.

Yes. In Mexico, exchanging virtual assets is a vulnerable activity under the LFPIORPI anti-money-laundering law: the provider always identifies the client and files a notice when an operation reaches 210 UMA (MX$24,635.10 at the 2026 UMA). Every desk order exceeds that threshold, so the desk also asks for a documented source of funds.
