Bitso Alternatives in Mexico (2026): Buy and Sell Bitcoin
Real alternatives to Bitso for buying and selling bitcoin in Mexico, compared on custody, limits, SPEI and fees with figures checked in September 2026.
Summary: Bitso is still the best-known way into bitcoin in Mexico, but it is not the right fit for every case. As of September 2026 there are at least four real alternatives that work with SPEI, Mexico's interbank transfer system: Aureo and Bull Bitcoin (brokers that deliver bitcoin to your own wallet), Mercado Pago (in-app purchases with third-party custody) and global exchanges such as Kraken or Binance (order books and a custodied balance). The difference that matters most is not the fee but who holds the bitcoin and how many steps sit between your pesos and your wallet. Below we compare custody, limits, SPEI and fees using figures read on each provider's own pages on 17 September 2026.
What is Bitso and how does it work?
Bitso is a digital-asset exchange founded in Mexico. You can deposit pesos by SPEI, buy or sell in its app or on the Bitso Alpha order book, and keep assets in a balance held by the platform. Moving bitcoin to your own wallet requires a later withdrawal. That sequence explains both its convenience for trading and the difference from a broker that delivers bitcoin directly to your wallet.
What Bitso does well, and why people look elsewhere
Bitso has real strengths. It runs its own order book (Bitso Alpha) alongside a quick-buy app, it moves pesos over SPEI with no deposit or withdrawal fee, and its peso flows run through Nvio Pagos México, an Institución de Fondos de Pago Electrónico (IFPE, an e-money institution) authorized under Mexico's Fintech Law and listed by the banking regulator CNBV. It also publishes a monthly proof of reserves to show it backs the assets it holds for users. If you want to trade several assets or keep a balance in an app, it is a serious option.
People usually look for an alternative for three reasons, none of them hidden flaws but consequences of the model:
- Custody. Bitcoin you buy sits in a balance Bitso controls until you withdraw it. If your goal is to accumulate in self-custody (you control the private key), withdrawal is an extra step. As of September 2026 Bitso charges a fixed 0.00001543 BTC for on-chain withdrawals and nothing for Lightning withdrawals.
- Monthly limits. Bitso sets a monthly deposit and withdrawal limit per account and raises it when you submit proof of address and income, with a review of up to 72 hours. Its blog says initial verification allows up to MX$50,000 per month (article updated 24 July 2026); the help center only says the amount depends on your account level, so check yours in your profile.
- A fee that is hard to see. Buying or selling in the app costs a spread shown before you confirm; Bitso does not publish that percentage. The published rates (0.600% maker / 0.780% taker at the first volume tier) apply to Bitso Alpha, the order book.
The previous article at this URL cited a MX$36,000 monthly withdrawal cap. That figure no longer appears on any Bitso page, so we have removed it.
If the question is whether Bitso is trustworthy or safe, there is no absolute answer. It has an identifiable entity, a peso rail operated by an authorized IFPE and proof of reserves; it also holds assets in custody, and bitcoin balances are not protected by IPAB deposit insurance. Assess compliance, solvency, operational security and custody separately, and do not treat authorization of the peso rail as a guarantee on bitcoin.
The real alternatives in Mexico, compared
Every figure comes from the provider's official pages, read on 17 September 2026; they change without notice, so confirm in the app before you transact. The full 14-platform SPEI comparison lives in Buy Bitcoin in Mexico with SPEI. Here we focus on the options that answer "what do I use instead of Bitso?".
Platform | Model and custody | Published fee | SPEI (in / out) | Published limits | Delivery to your wallet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Bitso | Exchange; Bitso holds your balance | Spread in the app (shown before confirming); Alpha 0.600% / 0.780% at the first tier | Free / free | Monthly limit per account; raised with documents | Separate withdrawal: 0.00001543 BTC on-chain; Lightning free |
Aureo | Bitcoin-only broker; holds no balance | 2.00% to 1.25% by ticket size; 1.00% from MX$200,000 (OTC desk) | Free / free | From MX$200,000 per month at Level 1; MX$2,000,000 at Level 2 | Included: each purchase goes to your saved address (Lightning or on-chain) |
Bull Bitcoin | Broker; non-custodial ("we never hold your Bitcoin") | No fixed percentage published; the rate is shown on its rates page | No fee, MX$1,000 minimum, no maximum / same | No limits published on the pages read | Included: Lightning, on-chain or Liquid |
Mercado Pago | App; custody by third parties (Paxos) | Shown in the app; not readable on a public page on the verification date | Fund your Mercado Pago balance / withdraw to your bank | In the app | Separate external transfer; conditions in its help center |
Kraken | Global exchange; holds your balance | Quick buy 1%; Kraken Pro 0.40% / 0.80% at the entry tier | 0.5% each way, MX$150 minimum; pesos convert to USD on arrival | By verification level | Separate withdrawal; fee by network |
Binance | Global exchange; holds your balance | By user tier; see its spot fee table | Via partner Medá with verified CURP; deposits processed within 30 minutes | By verification level | Separate withdrawal; fee by network |
One deliberate omission: Volabit, Mexico's first exchange, ceased operations in June 2023 and is no longer an option.
Bitso vs Binance: which is better in Mexico?
For Mexican pesos, Bitso offers a direct SPEI route and an MXN-denominated order book. Binance offers more markets and assets, but peso access depends on a partner and the balance is custodial there as well. If you are asking whether Binance is safe, use the same test as for Bitso: verify the entity and the rules that protect you in Mexico, inspect withdrawal and custody terms, and avoid leaving more on the platform than your use requires. Neither route removes the later withdrawal if your goal is bitcoin in self-custody.
Custody: the difference that matters most
An exchange such as Bitso, Kraken or Binance works in three steps: you deposit pesos into a balance, you buy bitcoin that stays in that balance, and later you withdraw to a wallet. While it sits in the balance, the platform controls the keys: that makes trading possible, but your bitcoin depends on the exchange's solvency and operating decisions. Proof of reserves narrows that uncertainty; it does not remove it. Neither a peso balance nor bitcoin held at an exchange is covered by IPAB, Mexico's deposit insurer, which protects bank deposits only.
A direct-to-wallet broker removes the middle step. With Aureo you first save a Lightning or on-chain address; when your pesos arrive by SPEI, the purchase executes and the bitcoin leaves for that address. There is no platform balance where the bitcoin waits. Bull Bitcoin follows the same logic. The downside is symmetrical: if you lose your seed phrase (the words that back up your private key), nobody can restore your balance, because nobody else holds your keys. Buy Bitcoin Direct to Your Wallet walks through the flow and Bitcoin Custody Risks Compared sets the risks of each model side by side.
Mercado Pago sits in between: you buy inside an app many people in Mexico already use, but custody is exercised by third parties (Molopo and Bruntal, operating with Paxos), and its own page states that crypto is neither regulated nor backed by the CNBV.
Limits, verification and SPEI
No SPEI platform works without identifying you: all require official ID and, to move pesos, a CURP (the Mexican population registry code; residents with a visa have one). What changes is the starting point.
- At Bitso, the monthly limit is individual and is raised with proof of address and income; review takes up to 72 hours.
- At Aureo, as of September 2026, Level 1 allows up to MX$200,000 per month and Level 2 up to MX$2,000,000 per month with a source-of-funds explanation and documents; the per-transaction limit is shown in the app. Details are in How Does Verification Work on Aureo?.
- Bull Bitcoin sets no maximum per SPEI transfer; the minimum is MX$1,000. Kraken, Binance and Mercado Pago show limits inside the account.
On the peso side, Bitso, Aureo and Bull Bitcoin charge nothing for SPEI. Kraken charges 0.5% to deposit and 0.5% to withdraw, MX$150 minimum, and converts your pesos to US dollars on arrival, so in practice you trade in USD.
Does Bitso report to the SAT?
No public primary source establishes that Bitso sends the SAT a tax report of every trade. Identity checks and anti-money-laundering notices do exist, and Bitso's peso rail runs through Nvio, a regulated IFPE. That is not the same as the SAT automatically receiving your gain or preparing your return. The Mexico crypto tax guide separates current notices from the automatic tax-information exchange scheduled under CARF.
Selling adds a nuance. At an exchange you sell from a balance you already deposited and then withdraw the pesos. In the flow Aureo publishes as of September 2026, you pay a Lightning invoice from your own wallet and receive pesos by SPEI in the registered account; you do not first deposit bitcoin into a platform balance. The sell page says the SPEI can arrive in under 15 seconds, as a provider reference rather than a bank guarantee.
Fees: compare the same use case
Loose percentages mislead. What helps is adding up everything you pay for bitcoin bought with pesos to end up in your wallet. Hypothetical example, a MX$10,000 purchase as of September 2026:
- Aureo: 1.75% (the MX$5,000 to MX$19,999 tier), so MX$175, with no extra spread over spot, no withdrawal fee and no network fee. Total MX$175, with the bitcoin already in your wallet.
- Bitso app: the spread shows on screen before you confirm; no published percentage. Withdrawing on-chain adds 0.00001543 BTC; over Lightning, nothing.
- Bitso Alpha: 0.780% as taker at the first tier (MX$78) plus the withdrawal, in exchange for working an order book.
- Kraken: 0.5% on deposit (MX$50), conversion to USD, 1% quick buy (MX$100) or 0.80% as Pro taker, plus the withdrawal fee by network.
The ranking changes with the amount and with whether you withdraw. If you leave bitcoin on the exchange, the order book is cheaper. If you want bitcoin in your wallet on every purchase, an all-inclusive price avoids steps and charges that stack. Aureo's full tier table and what it includes are in Aureo fees for buying and selling bitcoin.
Where each option fits
- Trading, several assets or a balance in the app: Bitso or a global exchange; Bitso has the advantage of working in pesos with no conversion.
- Accumulating bitcoin in self-custody on every purchase, with no withdrawal step: Aureo or Bull Bitcoin. Aureo is Bitcoin-only, operates in Mexico registered with the tax authority SAT as an "actividad vulnerable" (not an entity authorized by the CNBV) and publishes tiered fees. Bull Bitcoin is registered with SAT under the same regime and adds the Liquid network.
- Small amounts inside an app you already use, accepting third-party custody: Mercado Pago.
- Selling from your own wallet and receiving pesos in a Mexican bank without first depositing on an exchange: Aureo or Bull Bitcoin. For expats and foreign professionals this matters: you can hold bitcoin in your own wallet wherever you are and convert to pesos only when you need them in Mexico.
If you already hold bitcoin at Bitso and want it in self-custody, the cheapest route as of September 2026 is a Lightning withdrawal (free at Bitso) to a wallet you control; How to Set Up a Self-Custodial Lightning Wallet shows how.
One point of context: Aureo was called Swapido until October 2025; same company, same operation, new name.
Next step
Settle two questions: whether you want the bitcoin to live in your wallet or in a balance, and how many pesos you will move per month. With those answers the table narrows to one or two options. If your answer is self-custody, Buy Bitcoin shows the full flow (account, verification, saved address, SPEI to your personal CLABE) and Sell Bitcoin the reverse, paying from your own wallet and receiving pesos by SPEI.
