If you already have your own wallet and know what a seed phrase is, Aureo saves you steps. You buy with pesos through SPEI and the bitcoin lands at the address you choose. You sell from your own wallet and receive pesos in your bank. For larger amounts there is an OTC desk and a person who handles your trade. If you trade actively or want to leave a balance on a platform, another tool probably suits you better, and near the end we explain why.

From pesos to your wallet

You save your Bitcoin or Lightning address once. After that you send pesos through SPEI to your personal Aureo CLABE, and when the deposit arrives, Aureo buys and sends the bitcoin to that address (Aureo Help Center). There is no intermediate balance to withdraw.

Before you send, the screen shows an estimated exchange rate with a timer. The final rate is set when Aureo receives your pesos: the market price at that moment plus the fee for your tier. If the market moves while your bank processes the SPEI, your final rate reflects it.

Who holds the bitcoin depends on the address you give. If it belongs to a wallet where you hold the keys, it is in your self-custody from the moment it arrives. If it is an exchange address or a custodial Lightning wallet, that third party holds it.

To buy every month without opening the app, set up a recurring SPEI transfer at your bank to your Aureo CLABE. Each transfer that arrives becomes a purchase that goes straight to your wallet.

From your wallet to your bank

To sell, you create an order in pesos with the destination CLABE or card, and pay it from your wallet. Over Lightning, Aureo generates an invoice for the exact amount and pays out through SPEI as soon as it receives the payment, normally in under a minute (how to sell bitcoin from your wallet). On-chain, Aureo waits for two confirmations and a validation before paying, so timing depends on the network (sell bitcoin on-chain for pesos).

In neither case do you deposit your bitcoin into a platform balance. Your keys stay with you until you pay the order.

Paying third parties with bitcoin

You can also pay someone else's bank account: create the order with their CLABE and pay it from your wallet. The steps are in how to pay with bitcoin using Aureo Pagos.

What you pay

Aureo charges a fee per transaction that falls with the amount, the same for buys and sells (pricing):

Amount per transactionFee
Under MX$5,0002.00%
MX$5,000 to MX$19,9991.75%
MX$20,000 to MX$49,9991.50%
MX$50,000 to MX$199,9991.25%
MX$200,000 to MX$2,000,0001.00%
Over MX$2,000,000Custom quote

The per-transaction limit in the app is MX$200,000. The monthly limit depends on your verification level: MX$200,000 at Level 1, MX$2,000,000 at Level 2, and no preset limit at Level 3, with terms you set with your advisor.

Because the fee falls with the amount, splitting a large purchase into several small ones costs more. A MX$30,000 purchase pays 1.50%, or MX$450. Six purchases of MX$5,000 pay 1.75% each, MX$525 in total.

To compare with another platform, compare the whole job: how many pesos you handed over and how much bitcoin reached your wallet, at the same time and for the same amount. If you use an order book with maker and taker fees, such as Bitso Alpha, the result can favor it at some amounts (Bitso Alpha fees). The full comparison is in Bitso alternatives.

Large amounts, businesses and private wealth

Above MX$200,000, the OTC desk executes the whole trade with someone from the team (OTC desk vs exchange). Businesses open their account with the Aureo team, and How a company buys bitcoin in Mexico explains the process and paperwork.

For wealth of MX$2,000,000 and up, Aureo offers personal guidance and multi-institution custody through Onramp, where several independent institutions sign and none can move the funds alone. How to buy, where to hold and how to pass bitcoin on are separate decisions, best made in that order.

When Aureo isn't for you

Aureo only handles bitcoin and has no order book. Someone who trades several times a day needs charts and order types that don't exist here, and an exchange serves them better. The same goes for anyone who wants other cryptocurrencies or prefers to keep a balance on the platform. For very small, frequent purchases, an order book can cost less than the 2.00% tier.

What Aureo is

Aureo is registered with Mexico's tax authority (SAT) as a vulnerable activity, like the other platforms offering bitcoin in Mexico, and is not an entity authorized by the CNBV, Mexico's banking regulator. It also holds a bitcoin service provider license in El Salvador. The details are in how Aureo operates.

If you already use bitcoin, your feedback helps

People who already know Bitcoin spot the rough edges first. If something in the flow gets in your way, tap the help button in the app and tell us. If you know someone who wants to buy their first bitcoin with someone to explain it, introduce us.
